About This Spot

Shoten Sushi Takeaway and Grocery greets you like a familiar neighbor: unpretentious, calm, and humbly confident in the quality it quietly nurtures behind its modest storefront. The moment you step inside, the buzz of the outside world softens, giving way to a relaxed rhythm where the act of choosing your meal becomes part of the experience itself. It’s a place that feels thoughtfully paced, where each order, whether sushi or a comforting dish from their diverse small plates, arrives with care and without rush.

The atmosphere echoes a blend of friendly professionalism and genuine warmth, made all the more inviting by the approachable team who are happy to guide you through the menu or simply share a knowing smile when your eyes linger on a particular favorite. This is not a sleek urban sushi bar but a welcoming neighborhood spot where the joy is in the simple discovery of fresh flavors and familiar textures carefully balanced on each plate.

Whether you stop in for a quick takeaway or linger a little longer with a shared platter at home, the experience is quietly satisfying. There’s a thoughtful harmony in the way traditional elements like salmon sashimi and tempura coexist alongside unexpected treats such as miso eggplant or tender beef tongue skewers. The presence of classic comfort foods with a Japanese twist—crispy karaage chicken, subtle soy milk pudding—adds a dimension of homely satisfaction that invites return visits.

What lingers after your meal isn’t just the taste but the gentle feeling of connection—to the craft behind each dish, to the unhurried moments spent savoring them, and to a local favorite that values quality without fanfare. Shoten Sushi Takeaway and Grocery feels like a quiet culinary companion in Doncaster East, quietly confident and steady in its purpose to feed both body and spirit with honest, well-made food.

Tasty Japanese food with friendly service. An unassuming entrance leads you into a spacious venue with friendly team members. Orders are placed through a tablet device at your table as you browse the online menu. Our orders arrived after a short time, and delivery spaced well enough that we were not rushed. The dishes were generally tasty and well prepared. The Udon was very well prepared, presenting an excellent chewy texture that was complemented by a tasty Dashi broth. The California Maki was also noteworthy. An enjoyable dining experience.

This is my second time visiting this sushi place. We have sashimi & sushi platter, beef tartare and beef and beef tongue skewers. Their sushi platter is bigger than it looks, all the ingredients are fresh and clean. The skewers are so delicious. The matcha parfait is a bonus, it is not expensive and potion is big enough for 2 people to share.

Kuromatsu: A First-Time Japanese Feast! Over the weekend, I took a delicious leap into the unknown and dined at a Japanese restaurant for the very first time. The place? Kuromatsu—and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! First impression? Packed! The place was buzzing with energy, but thanks to a reservation, we waltzed right in. Soft lighting, no blaring music, and a warm, welcoming vibe—it was already off to a great start. Enter Chloe, our charming and ever-helpful server. With zero Japanese skills on our part (unless you count pointing at pictures on the menu), she guided us through the ordering process. And oh, what a selection! Sumibi tori chicken, chicken karaage, pork gyoza, salmon yuan yaki… It was like a parade of small, mouth watering dishes arriving at our table. Now, let’s talk about that salmon yuan yaki—absolute heaven! If I had no shame (or limits), I’d have ordered ten. Maybe eleven. Who’s counting? The ordering system was also pretty slick—everything was done through a touchscreen at the table, where you could even track the chef’s progress. No frantic hand-waving for a waiter—just tap, order, and watch the magic happen. The crowd? A fantastic mix of people. Families, couples, groups of friends, and yes, one very excited little girl at the next table who was clearly having the time of her life. So, the final verdict? Would I recommend Kuromatsu? Absolutely. Was it reasonably priced? Very. Would I go again? Try and stop me! And if the chef ever decides to share that salmon recipe… well, let’s just say I’d be first in line. Go Kuromatsu!

Wow, best izakaya-style restaurant possibly in Melbourne. Recently been Japan-side a number of times and dare I say the food here is actually better! Can't stop thinking about the tebasaki wings cooked over binchotan coals... Friendly staff, clean surrounds, casual atmosphere, low key no pressure vibe.. impeccable. Thanks for a great evening, Kuromatsu

Great Japanese restaurant around Doncaster East. We came with our family of four and we enjoyed the efficiency of the service, a delicious taste of the food and the ambience of the dining area. The roast beef with Japanese sauce and the scotch fillet were both incredible, with slightly different textures but a chewy and delicious taste. The chicken Katsu don had a strong curry taste, which I thought was delicious but may not be suitable for everyone’s tasting palate. The chicken teriyaki don was great. So was the California roll. The interior has a very nice ambience and if I didn’t know any better I’d think I’m dining in the CBD. Prices are all reasonable. Thank you very much

This is the sister store of Camberwell Suzuran—brand new and freshly renovated. It offers a wide range of Japanese products and includes a sushi bar. I haven’t tried the sushi yet but definitely will soon—hopefully it’s just as good as Suzuran!
